MAD wish to thank Jim at Borwick, Keith at Cleveley Bridge, Howard & Steven at Morecambe Angling Centre, Farmer Ford at Docker Park Farm and all our sponsors for making 2008 possible.
The sponsored adult & child match took place on the 19th of July 2008 at Borwick Fisheries, Carnforth.
It was well attended with 15 teams fishing for top place. But it wasn’t only the top weights everybody was after, but also the top amount of sponsors on their sheet. There were fundraising points to be had here, lots of them!
There were high hopes for the day with massive weights expected. The weather was cool and windy, it was a mixture of showers, sunny spells and cloudy over cast skies throughout the day.
The main sponsors for the match were Morecambe Angling Centre, S P Hardware & Catweasels of Morecambe Festival Market, Lunar Air Conditioning, Mrs J C Altham & Sons, George Speight & Son and Northern Car Glass. With surprise sponsorship from Gerry’s of Morecambe & Lanmore Fishing Club.
Starting at 10am, pegs were drawn by the juniors. The juniors fished the odd numbered pegs and their adult team mates fished the even numbers.
There were a few hiccups and a bit of scrabbling around for tackle, but the match started at 11am as planned.
The very second time was called there was a loud whooshing sound as 30 rods and poles were aimed at the water. Within minutes fish were being caught and we all thought “Yes! We are in for some good weights here, maybe even break the scales.”
But the weather was unkind to us. Pretty soon we were experiencing sunny spells and this sent the fish up in the water, then it started to rain so the fish went down to the bottom. This carried on all day and the fish were never at the same depth, everybody had to try very hard to catch the fish. Those juniors who picked the higher peg numbers (21 – 29) had the added problem of strong winds blowing into their faces.
A variety of baits were used including maggots, corn, meat, pellet and bread. Some fished the pole, others the waggler and some used ledger or a mixture of all 3.
Those juniors who were struggling were offered help throughout the match. One official walked around the lake, stopping to give advice and trying their best to get a fish for them.
Thankfully most caught and those who didn’t had pegs in the worst of the strong winds and the worst of the weed.

Dates of lessons
The lessons are split into 2 groups. Beginners start at 10am and finish at 1pm, advanced start at 2pm and finish at 5pm. Members can fish before and after lessons if they wish (as along as it is at Horseshoe Lake).
Carp overnighters to be arranged.
Please bring to ALL lessons enough bait, barbless hooks and your disgorger, waterproofs and something to sit on. If you need to borrow tackle you are asked to let the secretary know and your parents are asked to collect the tackle on or before the Thursday before the date. Tackle will no longer be brought to lessons or matches due to the space needed to transport the tackle.
In dry weather you could be able to drive your car to Horseshoe Lake, however you do so at your own risk. If you get the car stuck in the field the farmer may charge a fee to tow your vehicle free.
Please try to use natural baits, such as maggots, casters, worms, pinkies and bread. Please try to avoid sweet corn, absolutely NO boilies and NO tins!!
If anybody has any suggestions about fundraising matches for 2008 please let us know!
MAD have a 'leave no trace' policy which means there should be no litter, line, hooks or any other items discarded at our lake.
When you go fishing please check around your peg and make sure there is nothing that should not be there. If any litter of any sort is found in your peg you will be held responsible even if it is not yours!
